Nursing Care Plan For Abdominal Pain; Abdominal pain can be visceral or somatic. Visceral pain is usually due to nociceptors, chemicals, or stretch.
Abdominal pain can be due to the following reasons.
- Visceral Pain
- Somatic Pain
Visceral Pain
Visceral pain usually arises from the stretch, or due to nociceptors or some chemical irritants to the viscera of the abdomen, thus leading to pain in the viscera.

Somatic Pain
On the other hand, somatic pain can arise from the wall of the abdomen or parietal peritoneum.
Site and Radiation of Abdominal Pain
- Stomach
- Pain in stomach arises from epigastrium and can radiate to right hypochondrium, right iliac and vertebral column.
- Liver
- Pain in the right lobe of the liver arises in the right hypochondrium. And it can radiate towards shoulders, supraclavicular and scapular regions.
- Gall Bladder
- The pain of gall bladder usually arises in the epigastrium or right hypochondrium and radiates towards the tip of the shoulder, right scapula, right clavicle, and back because of embryological reasons. It may resemble anginal pain.
- Spleen
- It is usually felt as dragging sensation and fullness of left hypochondrium and left lumbar quadrant of the abdomen. It usually presents as local inflammation and catching pain.
Referred Abdominal Pain
Pain having an origin outside of the abdominal territory is termed as referred abdominal pain nursing care plan for abdominal pain.
Example:
- Pain due to myocardial infarction can radiate to the epigastrium, therefore, is a referred pain to the abdomen but is not of abdominal origin.

Nature of Pain
Nature of the pain is usually dependent upon two factors. like weather, it is arising from a solid organ or a hollow organ.
- If the pain is arising from a SOLID ORGAN than the pain is DULL and CONSTANT.
- If the pain arises from a HOLLOW ORGAN e.g colicky pai, it reaches to max in secs or mins and passes off, therefore, it is not constant (Except biliary tract and pancreas).
