Transposition of the Great Arteries
Etiology of Transposition of Great Arteries
Transposition of great arteries is due to multiple reasons and is of an unknown origin. Incidence increases significantly if the patient has Diabetes Mellitus. It is a congenital defect in which aorta and pulmonary trunk arise from the right ventricle and pulmonary trunk respectively.
Pathophysiology
Types of Transposition of Great Arteries
There are two types of TGA,
- Simple TGA
- Complex TGA
Simple TGA
Classification of transposition of great vessel is based on the complexity and complications of disease.
If the patient has an intact inter-ventricular septum and no other complications, then it known as Simple TGA.
Complex TGA
If the patient lacks intact inter-ventricular septum and involves other pathologies such as VSD, then it is known as complex TGA.
